Santa Monica, CA is home to the Santa Monica Airport, one of Los Angeles County’s oldest operating airfields. The Santa Monica Airport has a rich history. It is the former home of the Douglas Aircraft Company, whose planes completed the first circumnavigation of the world by air in 1924. The Santa Monica airport is also the birthplace of the Douglas DC-3 airliner which revolutionized air transport in the 1930s and 1940s. Over time, several historic airplane hangers have been converted into creative venues like art studios and theaters.
On Saturday, March 17, 2012 from 12:00noon to 5:00 pm, the Santa Monica Airport and Cultural Affairs Divisions are hosting the Santa Monica Airport ArtWalk. The Santa Monica community and visitors can explore open studios, watch artful demonstrations, and even try out an art workshop. More than 60 local artists and performers will have their private studios and works on display, showing off different mediums like painting, sculpture, ceramics, and mixed media. Many artists will be selling work from their studios and offering refreshments. There will also be live Irish jigs, food trucks and family friendly activities, a great way for the whole family to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day.
The Santa Monica Airport ArtWalk is part of the “Buy Local Weekend 2012.” From March 17 – 18, 2012, restaurants, hotels, retail stores and vendors throughout Santa Monica will offer specials encouraging members of the community and visitors to shop locally. A portion of the proceeds from the weekend will go to support local schools.
If you make a purchase this weekend, AIM Mail Centers in Santa Monica can help safely pack and ship your new items to their final destination.
