Edwardsville, Illinois, ranked third on Family Circle’s 2010 list of Best Towns For Families, is a family-friendly area rich in the arts. One of the main artistic venues in the town is the Edwardsville Arts Center, a community visual arts center. Featuring local, regional and national artists, the Edwardsville Arts Center regularly hosts shows and classes.
The current exhibit at the Edwardsville Arts Center is Folk Fiber & Flowers, an exhibit that highlights traditional art with a modern twist. Years ago, people used the resources available to them to create jewelry, wood carvings, gardens, pottery, and other items they needed. The focus of Folk, Fiber and Flowers is to celebrate these traditional arts influenced by modern society. Showcasing the work of local artists, Folk Fiber and Flowers lasts a full month and is filled with paintings, ceramics, jewelry, basketry, woodworking, metalwork, doll-making, and weaving. Those attending the Folk Fiber & Flowers show can purchase raffle tickets for lovely sustainable floral arrangements. Proceeds of the raffle go to help support the Edwardsville Arts Center. The opening reception for the exhibit was held on June 1, 2012, and the show runs until July 6, 2012.
For those who want to try creating their own art, the Edwardsville Arts Center offers classes, camps, and workshops for artists of all ages and skill levels. One of the classes currently offered is the Mud Play Clay Class for beginning and intermediate artists. Brandy Cloud, a local artist, will be teaching the class, offering her expertise in wheel-throwing, hand-building and glazing techniques.
