Manteca, California, located in the Central Valley, has a rich history and culture, which the Manteca Mural Society has worked to capture in nearly two dozen murals in downtown Manteca. Muralist David S. Gordon has created many of the murals in Manteca and has led teams of volunteers to complete several “Mural in a Weekend” projects, during which entire murals were painted in one weekend. Gordon’s murals can be seen all over the world and his paintings are found in over a dozen collections.
Currently, Gordon is working on the Baseball Mural, the fifth and final Library Park mural along a path dubbed “the history walk.” Over the weekend of August 9, 2012, members of the Manteca community were invited to help Gordon paint the mural. The mural depicts the final inning of a girls’ game, with the boys lined up along the third base fence waiting to play next. Along the opposite fence are spectators and a passing train from Tidewater Southern Railway. What makes this mural unique is that, for a $25 - $50 donation, residents of Manteca could have themselves depicted in the stands.
For those who want to see the murals, the Manteca Mural Society has a self guided walking tour of thirteen of the murals. Those who wish to get more involved with the Mural Society can attend the Manteca Mural Society’s monthly meetings. Meetings are held at noon at Mountain Mikes Pizza at 1120 N. Main St., and the next meeting is on September 12, 2012.
