The job of a notary is to make sure signers are aware of the documents they are signing and verify the signer's identity. They also make sure that the signer is agreeing to the document willingly and of their own free will. This ensures that notarized documents are legally binding, protecting all parties involved.

When you have documents that require notarization, such as real estate documents, there are several things you need to have in order to complete the process. Before heading to a notary office, make sure you know what you need to bring in order to have documents successfully notarized.

Yourself and Other Signers

First and foremost, you and any other individuals signing any documents must be present during the signing. The only way to have your signature notarized is by meeting face-to-face. If you are signing a document requiring multiple people's signatures, they will all need to come with you to ensure that their signatures are notarized. Generally speaking, a notary cannot notarize your signature over a video or phone call, however, a few states do allow you to have documents notarized through secure notary sites, but this is limited.

Valid Identification

It is important to have a valid form of identification that includes a photo, your legal name, and a signature. The most common forms of ID include a state-issued driver's license or identification card, a U.S. passport, or a U.S. military ID. Some states may allow other forms of identification. Everyone signing the document will need to have a valid ID in order for their signature to be notarized. It is also essential that the name on your ID matches your name on the document. For example, if you were recently married and changed your legal name but have not changed it on all forms of ID and documents, you will need to make sure you have at least one valid ID that matches your name on the document you want notarized.

The Document(s) You Need to Sign

The most important item you will need to bring to a notary is the document or documents that you need notarized. The notary will examine your ID and the document to verify your identity and the contents of what you are signing. The notary will also make sure you are of sound mind before signing, and that you aren't being coerced into giving your signature. Then the notary will walk you through signing the document and any other paperwork required to have it notarized.

Payment for the Service

The fee you can expect to pay for notary services can vary, but most states have a maximum fee that notaries can set according to the law. Know what forms of payment are acceptable and what the maximum fee you can expect to pay is in order to be prepared ahead of time. If a notary is traveling to you, they may also have a travel or convenience fee in addition to the notary fee, so be prepared for that as well.
