Most people are familiar different art mediums like oil paint, sculpture, or photography, but one medium that isn’t quite as common is woodturning. Woodturning is the art of forming objects from wood using hand held chisels and a lathe. As the lathe turns, the wood remains stationary and is slowly shaped by the lathe. Using this basic process, wood artists create a variety of artwork, including some very intricate pieces. Many wood artists like to create artwork out of burls, a tree growth in which the grain has grown in a deformed manner, to create one-of-a-kind pieces of artwork.
Wood artist John Benton takes the natural beauty of wood and burls and transforms them into exquisite pieces of artwork. By recycling salvaged pieces of wood, Benton makes intricate sculptures by turning the wood on a lathe, and then carving, piercing and bending it to form sculpture pieces. Benton also uses the unusual grains of burls to create unique artwork. Through his artwork, John works to bring attention to the beauty of nature.
Those interested in John’s work can view his art in a number of museums and galleries including Idlewild House in Winston Salem NC, Andre Christine Gallery in Mooresville NC, and The Columbia Museum of Art in Columbia, S.C. Benton is also very involved in various woodturners associations, including the American Craft Council, AAW and Carolina Mountain Woodturners.
