For the first time in nearly 100 years, the price of a first-class stamp decreased. As of April 10, 2016, the cost to mail a one-ounce letter dropped from 49 cents to 47 cents – just in time for tax day! The decrease is due to an agreement with Congress. To help alleviate the revenue declines from the Great Recession, the Post Office was able to increase prices only until the Postal Service collected surcharges totaling $4.6 billion. They were expected to reach that amount by April 10th, thus the decrease in prices.
